Kenneth Jay Lane and Costume Jewellery
Article by Tom Coulter
Costume jewellery (also known as fashion jewellery) is the jewellery manufactured as decoration for the masses to complement an outfit. Costume jewellery was first introduced in the 1930s as economical and to an extent, disposable accessories, intended to be fashionable for the short period it is in vogue. One of the main pioneers of costume jewellery is the renowned designer Kenneth Jay Lane. Its main use is in fashion as opposed to “real” (fine) jewellery which is primarily regarded as collectibles, keepsakes, or investments. Costume jewelry is made of less valuable materials including base metals, glass, plastic, and synthetic stones; in place of more precious materials.
Modern costume or fashion jewellery is made from inexpensive simulated gemstones including rhinestones, brass, resin and lucite. However, there is a growing market in designer and high end costume jewellery which incorporates Swarovski crystals, cubic, gold- or silver-plated brass, and sometimes vermeil or sterling silver. Some pieces incorporate resin, wood and leather.
The real golden era for the costume jewellery began in the middle of the twentieth century. As the class structure in America changed, so did measures of real wealth. Women in all social stations, even the working-class woman, could own a small piece of costume jewelry. The average woman could acquire and wear a considerable amount of this mass-produced jewelry that was both affordable and stylish.
Costume jewellery was further made popular by various designers in the mid twentieth century. Some of the most remembered names in costume jewelry include both the high and low priced brands: Crown Trifari, Dior, Chanel and Coventry.
Coco Chanel greatly popularized the use costume jewellery in her years as a fashion designer, bringing costume jewelry to life with gold and faux pearls. Kenneth Jay Lane in the USA and Butler and Wilson in the United Kingdom have since the 1960s been known for creating unique pieces. Kenneth Jay Lane is now legendary for designed fabulous pieces for fashion icons including Jackie Onassis, Elizabeth Taylor and Audrey Hepburn. In many instances, high-end fashion jewelry has achieved a “collectible” status, and increases in value over time. Today, there is a substantial market for high end designer costume jewellery as well as vintage designer pieces.Today, the demand for fashion and costume jewellery is huge. With fashion shows telling us to accessorize, accessorize and accessorize some more, huge statement necklaces, cocktail rings, cuff bracelets are all integral to a modern fashionista’s wardrobe. Butler & Wilson Jewellery have a huge collection of exotic and colourful designs including enormous Swarovski encrusted brooches and chokers. Kenneth Jay Lane has an enormous back catalogue of over 10,000 designs. Famous for his floral and nature design and incredibly beautiful enamel and Swarovski crystal work, he is still prolific in his designing even after five decades in the industry.
There has recently been a development of new fashion jewellery brands including Californian CC Skye and Disney Couture. Affordable and chic, there is no reason not to build up a gorgeous collection to add interest to your daily choice of attire. With the trend these days for “chiconomics”, it certainly makes sense to save the pennies and go for faux!
